Joanna Orphanou, Team Leader
Joanna has 13 years experience in the telecoms industry and now works for Orange. She has taken a very active role as team leader within the North London team spearheading the development of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Careers Fair, Charter Your Way To Career Success in Marketing , which the takes place in London twice a year. This event is an ideal forum to meet recruiters and discuss career opportunities. “Getting involved with my regional CIM team was a natural step after gaining my CIM qualifications: for me it was part of finally putting all that theory into practice! Though I work in marketing, there’s only so much experience any single job role can offer. I want to stretch my professional skills as far as possible and being a CIM team leader volunteer and board member complements my career efforts perfectly and helps me develop my skills in a different environment”.

Mike
Lowkin
Having gained experience as a Product & Channel
Development Manager, Mike now works as an Internal Relationship
Manager for the Royal Bank of Scotland. He joined the team whilst
studying for the Postgraduate Diploma, as a way of keeping up to
date with current marketing insight. As Mike explains “Being
part of the North London team provides me with an opportunity to
maintain my awareness of the latest marketing issues.” |
Robert
Harris
Robert’s involvement with the North London
team began as a direct result of attending a Chartered Institute
of Marketing talk by a leading retail chain. “I’ve been
very lucky to work in both small and large organisations in my chosen
marketing sector – legal – and this experience has been
a huge factor in helping me progress my career, ” comments
Robert. He now work as the European Marketing Manager for an American
law firm, based in London. |
Howard
Whisker
After working in retail for many years, Howard
decided to make a career change. He gained an MA in Marketing from
Greenwich and has been self-employed ever since. Howard is now engaged
in Marketing Research as well as lecturing in Marketing and related
topics at Enfield College. Howard says: “Throughout my career,
it’s my involvement with the Chartered Institute of Marketing
that has remained a constant.” |
Jay
Gorasia
Having previously worked for HBOS plc (the organization
formed from the merger of Halifax and The Bank of Scotland), Jay
is now the Marketing Manager for the Institute of Advanced Motorists,
the UK’s leading road safety charity. “I’d advise
career-minded marketers to undertake consistent and effective personal
PR campaigns to ensure that key people in your organisation know
who you are,” comments Jay. Jay sees involvement with the
North London team as a means to contribute to the profession and
network with like-minded marketers. |
Wanjiku
Carty
Wanjiku joined the committee two years ago to get more experience in the practical side of marketing and to meet other people in the field. She graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing in 2005. Wanjiku says "Being involved with the CIM North London team has enabled me to gain insights into different areas of Marketing and to stay on top of the latest trends and ideas". Wanjiku has previously worked for IBM and Lloyds TSB and
currently works in Marketing Communications for NatWest, part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group in Central London.

Vipasna
Luthra
Vipasna’s job primarily entails project
and production management of marketing communications programmes
for a leading healthcare and life science communications agency.
The Chartered Institute of Marketing enables her to gain exposure
to marketing professionals from different industry sectors that
she would not normally have the opportunity to interact with in
her current job. “Having a mainly agency background my advice
to others is - Build and nurture client relationships.” |
Marianna
Ivanscics
Marianna joined the North London team, as a Chartered
Institute of Marketing student for the Diploma. Having gained a
vocational qualification of direct relevance to her career, Marianna
is now Head of Marketing for Jetix Europe (formerly Fox Kids Europe)
overseeing all marketing activities in the Central Eastern European
region. Marianna comments: “The CIM events we run in North
London provide me with a good opportunity to get the latest on top
UK and International brands across a wide range of sectors.” |
Claire Dirdal
Every day is Christmas for Claire as she heads up the buying team for the Food, Confectionery and Alcoholic Christmas gift department in Bhs. Keeping marketing front of mind in what is essentially a trading role, means that Bhs product ranges can be more carefully targeted to end recipients - ultimately driving greater commercial success for the business. Claire achieved Chartered Marketer status and sees her voluntary role with the Chartered Institute of Marketing as a great chance to keep abreast of industry developments and cutting edge marketing thinking. As Claire explains “It's fantastic on the CV. Plus between them, my CIM colleagues provide an invaluable support network and sounding board anytime it's needed.”
