Boost your social responsibility with GLR

Many GLR members keep telling us how they’d like to get involved with charity or volunteer work that allows them to contribute to the wider community and the not-for-profit sector. It’s something we’ve been looking at over summer and now the GLR Board is proud to announce a brand new partnership with two key organisations: The Prostate Cancer Charity and The British Paralympic Association.

Colin Linton says “This new charity tie-in will offer members another channel for dedicating time and energy to a good cause. Many of us are already involved with our favourite charities, but by joining forces officially, GLR hopes to create some highly successful fundraising and awareness generating activities for two important causes.”

So keep an eye out for news of forthcoming GLR initiatives that will get the fundraising/awareness ball rolling. Or alternatively if you would like to get involved directly with the charities, offer your expertise or raise the profile within your organisation, they would love to hear from you.

Why did we choose these two charities? Here are a few good reasons:s the leading organisation for marketing professionals, membership of The Chartered Institute of Marketing is all about career development.

The Prostate Cancer Charity

  • The Prostate Cancer CharityRelatively small, but growing in visibility.
  • Unlike the major cancer charities, GLR involvement can make a huge impact on awareness and funds.
  • Relies entirely on donations and joint campaigns with large corporations.
  • Not seeking exclusively male awareness; women are often more proactive about men’s health than men themselves, so a key target for awareness is wives, daughters, sisters, etc.

The facts…

  • Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men.
  • One man dies every hour from prostate cancer in the UK alone.
  • 35,000 men are diagnosed each year – 10,000 men die each year – a similar number to breast cancer
  • Most cases occur in men aged over 50 but it can occur in men as young as 35-40.
  • African Caribbean men are three times more likely to be diagnosed than their white counterparts.

  • Gaining in profile, particularly fuelled by the London 2012 Games, much of which will take place within the GLR patch.
  • Paralympic Games take place at the same venue as the Olympic Games and are now the second largest sports event in the world (second only to the Olympics).
  • Working towards Paralympic events in 2008 and 2012 offers GLR promotional potential

The BPA’s remit…

  • To provide the very best specialist coaching, medical support, nutritionists, sports scientists and training camps to help our athletes realise their goals at the Paralympic Games.
  • To have a British team that will produce the best possible results and to continue our tradition as a top performing and medal-winning nation. Results such as these are wonderful for the athletes themselves, the nation as a whole and for the wider disabled community.
  • To work with disability sports bodies to identify and develop new talent.
