We've put together some tips to help GLR members to get the most out of the Careers fair.

Five things to bring with you to the Careers
fair: |
- Copies of your CV - about 25 should be enough.
Be sure it represents your knowledge, skills, and abilities
effectively. It needs to look professional in an easy to read
format on plain white or cream paper - and be free of spelling
mistakes.
- A 20-second "sales pitch." Hand the
recruiter a copy of your CV and be prepared to expand on it
quickly! Share basic information about yourself and your career
interests.
- Information about the organisations that will
be attending. Gather information as you might do for a job interview.
- A smile, a smart appearance, a strong handshake,
and a positive attitude. First impressions are important.
- Energy! Career fairs require you to be on your
feet moving from table to table for an hour or so. Each time
you meet someone, be at your best, as refreshed as possible!

Five things to take home from the Careers
fair: |
- Business cards from the companies you have met.
Use the cards to write follow-up notes to those you are most
interested in.
- Brochures from the companies you met and their
clients. Most recruiters will have information for you to pick
up, including brochures, diskettes or CD's or even job descriptions.
- Notes about contacts you've made. Take a few
minutes after you leave each table to jot down the main points,
including contact details.
- A better sense of your career options. If you
have used the event to full advantage, you'll have been thinking
about their needs and your background, evaluating which company
might be a match for you.
- Self-confidence in interacting with agencies
and employers' representatives. A careers fair gives you the
opportunity to practice your interview skills in a less formidable
environment than a formal interview.
