The final round asked young people to “to conceptualise, design and create a product or device which will become a major aid to fire prevention in the UK.” Members of the GLR were on hand on July 1st at the Emirates Stadium to help make the event a success. Mocky Khan, GLR Chair, and Phillip Preston, Regional Director, East of England and Greater London, were both judges. Steve Revill, Robert Harris, Michael Lowkin, Sebastian Franco, Jay Gorasia and Mark Ganellin were all there to offer advice and guidance.

Each team had the morning to complete a detailed business plan covering product development, pricing, marketing, and budgets. GLR volunteers were there as mentors, to help teams when they needed clarity on marketing issues. The teams were judged on a range of key criteria including the market potential, profit and loss accounting, product design and team performance. And that’s only a few of the areas the teams were scored on. They also had to complete a master plan, PowerPoint Presentation, an ICT mock-up, an advert, a research proposal and a team report. This project was a huge challenge, one where teamwork was absolutely essential.

Working with young people is always refreshing. And it’s important. After all, some of them may become marketers, and they all deserve a chance to find our how businesses work and what business people are like. The young people were excited about what they were doing. They asked good questions. When young people are curious, you know they’re learning and really thinking. All in all it was a great day.

With the sunny day and longer evenings, I’ve been able to get quite a bit of training in. I like to mix it up a bit. So when I want to try something else, I get on bike for a few hours. For me, the key to preparing for a race is variety. I like some change in my routine. The other thing that’s important is a sense of purpose. Having a goal in mind makes it easier to get those shoes on and get out the door. I’m doing all this work for a good reason. Making sure every athlete gets a chance and compete is important. And I feel a sense of enthusiasm for the 10K race I’m entering. I think having a clearly defined purpose, like taking part in a race that raises money for a charity, is important. When you get off track and miss some training or over do it on a Saturday night, it’s that much easier to get back on track. If I were just trying to improve my general fitness levels, I might not feel so focused on my goal. I think that’s true of the way I work, too. I like having clear objectives and I feel great when my clients reach their objectives. For me, it’s not really about competing with people. It’s about achieving new goals.
