Recession here, recession there, recession everywhere.  You can’t move a muscle without hearing some bad news.  But, there are strategies you can use to fight back. Plenty of them. Start with your own CV.  Just as weaker businesses will find it tough to survive the recession, a weaker CV will also flounder. A strong CV should make the most of your strengths and experience as clearly as possible.  Craft it, polish it and get feedback from other professionals. Make sure you are clearly communicating your “personal brand” proposition.

According to Brand Republic, a survey conducted by NORAS demonstrates there are considerably more UK job seekers year on year, with 123% increase in candidates actively looking for a new role between 2006 and 2007. That statistic is bound to have grown by some margin, and will only continue.

Spend some time looking in your own professional mirror.  After all, you’re asking current or potential employers to invest in you. If you see any glaring weaknesses, how can you address them? Are there courses you could sign up for at work or with the Chartered Institute of Marketing ? Maybe you can get some independent advice through a mentor. The GLR’s Mentor Scheme  is there to support you.

You probably have more resources to hand than you realise.  Spending time on your own personal brand is always a good investment. Just because you’re in a good job doesn’t mean you should relax. What about the next job- or the job after that? Who is your target audience, and what do you have to say to them? Why should they buy your ‘product’ rather than someone else’s?

Now it’s your turn to jump in. Do you have an experience or advice you’d like to offer?  What’s worked for you?  What’s happening in your sector?

My advice would be “don’t beat yourself up into a recession”
